How to Become a Doula in Australia (and Why Training and Mentorship Matter)

Here’s something many people don’t realise:

In Australia, there’s no legal requirement or certification needed to call yourself a doula.

Birthwork is part of an unregulated industry - which means anyone could step into this role without formal education, mentorship, or practical experience.

While that freedom has value (birthwork should never be gatekept), it also raises important questions about preparedness and safety. Supporting families through birth and postpartum is deeply rewarding work, but it calls for more than good intentions. It requires knowledge, emotional resilience, and the ability to navigate real-life situations with confidence.

That’s where structured training and mentorship make all the difference.

Why Doula Training Matters

Birth and postpartum support is not just about “being there” for families. It’s about:

  • Understanding the physiology of birth and the postpartum body

  • Knowing how to support informed decision-making

  • Offering practical comfort measures and guidance

  • Understanding hospital systems and policies, and helping families navigate informed consent

  • Building emotional resilience and clear boundaries as a professional

Families deserve doulas who are well-prepared, grounded, and supported in their work and doulas deserve a training pathway that doesn’t leave them to figure it all out alone.

How Luna Essence is Different

At Mother Moon, our Luna Essence: Birth & Postpartum Doula Training combines:

  • Evidence-informed education on birth, postpartum, physiology, and practical skills

  • Mentorship and ongoing guidance as you step into your own student doula experience

  • Community and connection with like-minded learners and experienced mentors

  • Integration of both science and intuition — so you feel confident and capable, not just on paper, but in practice

We don’t just hand you a certificate. We walk alongside you as you grow into this role, with real-world skills and a supportive community behind you.
